BER – The Capital City Airport

In the coming years Berlin-Schönefeld Airport will be expanded into a new international airport Berlin-Brandenburg BER. This will allow for the realisation of the most important investment project in eastern Germany. At the same time, this decision is a signal for new investment in the region. The airport will have a starting capacity of approximately twenty-two million passengers per year. Depending upon traffic development, the airport can be expanded to accommodate up to forty million passengers.

Thousands of new jobs
At present Berlin’s airports employ a total of 33,600 people. With increasing traffic capacity, a significant improvement in the local economy, and additional buying power, BBI will allow for the creation of several thousand new jobs in the region by 2012. The total employment effect of BBI will most likely include over 70,000 jobs by 2012.

The new capital city airport in Schönefeld should begin operation in June 2012.
