Otto Lilienthal began his first glider flights near Berlin and initiated his groundbreaking research into the aerodynamics of bird flight. The results of this research ushered in dynamic developments in the field of aviation the world over at the beginning of the twentieth century.

The construction of the German Experimental Centre for Aviation in Berlin-Adlershof and the founding of the German Lufthansa in Berlin’s Kaisersaal in 1926 closely linked further milestones in the development of German aviation to the Berlin-Brandenburg region.

Developments in aviation were accelerated by the first experiments in space flight at the Chemical-Technical Experimental Centre in Berlin-Plötzensee.
